About the artist / Artist's Statement
As one of the oldest craft, if not the oldest, pottery has crossed the boundary from function to a sculptural material used for expressing ideas. Yet ceramic art, as it is fashionally called, still struggles to earn its pedigree as an art form. In my ceramic work, I find myself going back to its origins in domestic usage, whether directly as in the making of functional vessels or in the symbolic and cultural representations of their usage. My work has used the humble rice bowl as a cipher for the search for containment and a sense of ’place’ for women. Issues of ecological interdependency are also important concerns which are expressed in the growing of actual plants in my current work.
