About the artist / Artist's Statement

My works are mostly about textures and how we ‘read’ them. I want a viewer to be attracted by a seductive surface, a surface demanding closer inspection. But by inspecting the drawing, the viewer will realize that it’s not all what it seems, the surface is hiding or camouflaging abject or threatening images. The society of today is overflowing with images, most of them have agendas, hidden or not, that can be understood on different levels and in different contexts. You see the glossy, multifaceted surfaces of today, each section a collection of meanings that you can either resist or agree to. If you look behind the screen, if you un-plug from the information machinery, you realize that what you see is not always what you get.

I’m using powdered graphite which is worked into the paper with my fingers, the tactility is important, both in creating the drawing and the final result.

The 3-D objects are also made with the purpose of creating an urge to touch the object and to challenge the reading of what is presented. By placing it in a box the viewer is denied the possibility to touch and feel the object, the same way a hand stroking the surface of my drawings only will touch paper and not what is presented and understood.
